Epilogue

If there was one thing that could be said about the emperor was that he liked his pomp and circumstance. As Elizabeth approached him, guarded by two of the royal eunuchs, he looked down upon her, trying to appear dignified. He tried, but he wasn’t exactly successful. His gigantic belly didn’t help him, nor his bald head. When he smiled he looked even worse.

“The first time I saw you,” He started, his voice loud and easy to hear. It was perhaps his best feature. “I knew you would be the one to grant me my desire.”

I held back the urge to scoff – it wouldn’t have helped. Ever since Elizabeth and I were caught we had to walk on eggshells, fearing the moment the axe would fall upon our heads. There had been no way to hide Elizabeth’s pregnancy from the emperor. We thought that whoever saw us would have gone directly to him and denounced us, but they hadn’t. Maybe they hadn’t seen more than they should, and simply thought Elizabeth was having a good time with her perfectly normal female handmaiden. I don’t know.

Whatever the reason, Elizabeth and I were safe for now, and so she would be forced to keep playing the part of loving wife to the emperor. I hated it, but there was nothing to be done about it.

“I’m pleased to be of service, my lord.” Elizabeth’s words were demure, soft, and the emperor smiled at her, and ordered her to advance. She did so reluctantly, and he gestured for the chair beside his. It was a declaration of intent, he wanted to make her his first wife – the most important woman in the empire – and Elizabeth accepted with grace. It meant she would be in danger from now on, and the target of all the ambitious wives the emperor possessed, but that had been what Elizabeth intended in the first place – to be this powerful.

She met my gaze after her words and I smiled at her, but then she looked away, gazing at the entire room, and I felt my smile wilt. I hadn’t touched her since we were caught, and I wanted her, wanted her as I had never wanted anyone before, but I understood we might never be together again.

The ceremony didn’t take long, and then everyone kneeled for the emperor and the mother of the next ruler of the empire. I did so with a heavy heart, knowing Elizabeth’s position was a dangerous one, and that if anything happened to her, her life and my child’s would be forfeit.

I could only hope everything would go according to plan, but something told me it wouldn’t be that easy, and many things would change in the future, and perhaps not for the better.
